Storvik and Canadian industrial company Charl-Pol have joined forces to establish Alumotion, a new Canadian company dedicated to delivering advanced automation and robotic solutions to the aluminium industry.

Through Alumotion, we aim to provide Canadian smelters with modern and proven robotized anode assembly solutions, backed by local engineering, manufacturing, project execution, operation and long-term service capabilities.

The establishment of Alumotion builds on close cooperation between Storvik and Charl-Pol over the past two years, during which the companies have worked together on project development and identified opportunities to combine their complementary expertise in the Canadian market.

Alumotion is a natural next step in the relationship we have built with Charl-Pol. Both companies have more than a century of industrial experience and share a strong culture of engineering, innovation and solving complex challenges together with our customers. By combining our capabilities, we can bring proven automation solutions closer to Canadian smelters and support them locally throughout the lifetime of the equipment, says Stein Kjartan Vik, Group CEO of Storvik.

Connecting two established aluminium regions

The partnership brings together expertise from two of the world’s most established aluminium-producing countries. Norway and Canada have developed advanced aluminium industries over generations, supported by renewable hydropower, skilled industrial workforces and a continuous focus on technology, safety and operational improvement.

Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of primary aluminium, while Norway is Europe’s largest producer.

Both Storvik and Charl-Pol have also developed their expertise in close proximity to major aluminium-producing environments. Storvik was founded in Sunndal, Norway, in 1913 and remains headquartered there today, next to Hydro Sunndal – Europe’s largest and most modern primary aluminium plant.

Charl-Pol, founded in Québec in 1921, has built extensive experience serving the Canadian aluminium industry, with operations strategically located close to key aluminium-producing regions, including Kitimat, British Columbia.

This proximity has given both companies a practical understanding of the operational demands and technological challenges of modern smelter operations.

Canada has a highly developed aluminium industry, and its producers continuously seek new ways to improve safety, productivity and reliability. Charl-Pol and Storvik share the same approach: combining strong engineering and technological capabilities with practical industrial experience. Alumotion brings these strengths together in Canada, close to the customers and operations we want to support, says Gabriel Tremblay, General Manager of Charl-Pol.

Complementary expertise for Canadian smelters

A key focus for Alumotion will be advanced robotized anode assembly solutions.

Storvik brings extensive experience in developing, integrating and operating automated systems for the aluminium industry, combining technologies such as robotics, automated handling, vision systems and condition monitoring.

Charl-Pol contributes extensive engineering and technological expertise spanning project management, metallurgy and welding, manufacturing, equipment repair and maintenance, together with an established Canadian industrial footprint.

Through Alumotion, these complementary capabilities will be combined in a Canadian organization able to support customers from engineering and project development through manufacturing, installation and commissioning to operation, maintenance and continuous improvement.

The joint venture brings together more than 200 years of combined industrial experience with a clear ambition: to apply proven technology and practical industrial knowledge to the next generation of Canadian aluminium production.
